Putin Praises India-Russia Ties as “Brotherly,” Hails New Delhi’s Technological Strength Amid Global Energy Tensions

Russian President Vladimir Putin praised India-Russia ties as “brotherly” and trust-based at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, highlighting India’s coding expertise and technological strength. He defended energy cooperation amid global tensions and reaffirmed Moscow’s commitment despite external diplomatic pressure from Washington.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has delivered a strong endorsement of India-Russia relations, describing bilateral ties as “brotherly” and “trust-based in every sense,” even as India continues to face sustained diplomatic pressure from Washington over its energy imports from Russia.

Speaking at the St Petersburg International Economic Forum, Putin praised India’s human capital and technological capabilities, particularly highlighting the country’s global reputation in coding and software engineering. He stated that Indian professionals are widely respected for their education and advanced competencies across multiple technical fields.

“We know how talented the Indian people are and how well educated they are. Indians possess outstanding competencies that have earned global recognition, especially in coding and several other fields,” Putin said during his address.

The Russian President underscored the strategic importance of India-Russia cooperation at a time of heightened volatility in global energy markets, driven by geopolitical tensions in West Asia and concerns over potential disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. He noted that the partnership has delivered mutual economic and strategic benefits for both nations.

Referring to recent global disruptions, Putin remarked, “Prime Minister Modi had to introduce certain restrictions, asking people not to use personal cars or travel long distances because of what is happening in the Strait of Hormuz. I believe our companies made the right decision, and so did our Indian counterparts, when they chose the path of close cooperation. Today, we are extending a helping hand by increasing supplies to the Indian market and to Asia in general, while continuing to share our technological solutions.”

In a pointed message addressing external diplomatic pressure, Putin asserted that Russia’s engagement with India remains unaffected by shifting global political dynamics, reaffirming Moscow’s commitment to its bilateral obligations.

“Nobody can dictate terms to us, and nobody would even try to do so. We will always honour the commitments we make to our partners, especially partners like India,” he stated.

Highlighting long-standing defence and technological collaboration, Putin noted that a significant portion of India’s armed forces continues to rely on Russian-origin military equipment. He described this legacy as one rooted in the Soviet era, strengthened by decades of mutual trust.

“This is a tradition that dates back to the Soviet era. Our relationship with our Indian friends is unique because it is built on mutual trust. We are focused not merely on trade and commerce, but also on joint research and development,” he added.

The Russian President also commended the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, suggesting that punitive measures aimed at India would ultimately prove counterproductive for those imposing them. He further acknowledged the ongoing development of India-United States relations, stating that India retains full sovereignty in choosing its strategic and economic partners based on national interest.

“India is free to choose the products it considers most advanced, most suitable for its needs, and those that offer the best value in terms of price and quality,” Putin said.

The remarks come at a time of heightened global geopolitical realignment, reinforcing the strategic depth of India-Russia relations amid shifting international alliances and energy security challenges.
